Moaners
« on: 10.10.08, 17:07:56 »
I am starting to get a little disillusioned with Some of the SMF team, most of the moaners / gripers seem to have ulterior motives, ie connected to another portal project etc. Sad very sad in my eyes  :-\

My test Site;http://pplb.net/test/index.php
It's nice to be nice :)

Afraid I don't quite understand you. Could you perhaps rephrase, as I didn't understand?

Bob, you said something similar over at SMF, implying my friend Trin and myself were involved in some sort of conspiracy to nobble Feline before she got off the ground. Word of advice mate: drop the conspiracy theory act. It's way out of line and will only lose you credibility.

Personally I am not involved with any other portal project and was simply reporting my experiences in the hope of finding a solution that would be tractable for the average punter. As I said at SMF I am very impressed with the product but the installation process seems sensitive to server configuration. I lack the expertise required to discern exactly what the problem is. I'm sure it can be dealt with but at the moment it seems to be an issue. Once a solution can be posted this portal will have a much wider appeal. This is good, yes?

Well said, antechinus.    :)

Feline put a lot of efforts into making it very easy for user to configure the portal, and the results showed :D

However, perhaps equally as important.... as "first impression" (as they say), is the ease of installation of the portal itself.   ;)

I will not get in a discussion which Portal is better or not. Any user can choose that for itself.
But I can't not say, that SimplePortal is a great deal .. I thinks it's on the same way as TinyPortal ... bigger and bigger .. slower and slower.
That's not my way. I prefer a slim, quick and easey Portal with high level OOP programming and a open structure. So anybody can add his own code WITHOUT change the basics.

I like all the portal systems regardless. It's all about user preference.

We're not in some death match to be better than each other. We all love Simple Machines, and we love it enough to make code alterations to the extent of creating system portal additions to it. We are all in the same place in regards to our hearts. We code to help people and to show our passion, and we get them to enjoy their SMF experiance even more.

You don't need reasons or logic to help people. Arguing what portal is better is no different then doing just that. Be it Simple Portal, PortaMx, or Tiny Portal.

Simple Portal doesn't have cats.

I like cats. :)

Well mine's sorted now. Feline did a manual installation for me. Turns out server configuration was the problem. I'll have to sort that and I think placing warnings here and at SMF should help stop future problems with other people's installations.

The portal appears to be functioning flawlessly now. 8)

Precisely.

Let me say this. I am by NO MEANS a coder with the skills to create a portal, nor is anyone beating down my door to add me to their development team. What I am however, is an intelligent admin in the midst of what is very much a learning process. I can and will state myself clearly, both my questions and my opinions. Now, on SMF when it was implied that I came into the thread with some ulterior motive, rest assured I laughed heartily at the notion. At the same time, my gut instinct was to back away from this project entirely because that's simply not a professional thing to imply without grounds.

I on the other hand have no problem doing this. Simple portal as it stands right now, isn't even in the game.

I was a strong supporter of TP for a long time, and I think they have an excellent product. However, the support at TP leaves much to be desired. I see people pop in with questions and the people who have been placed in the position to answer and troubleshoot are simply put, RUDE. Much of the time, they're unhelpful and the member is left to the mercy of other TP users to explain what they need to know, or they have to figure it out themselves. I've actually seen replies such as "why don't you just try inserting code in different places and see what works". Serious? I would have left TP in my recycle bin long ago (due to this) if there had been ANYthing else out there with even half of the dynamic possibilities.

feline, despite the insinuations made at SMF, I didn't post to sabotage you, I posted because issues need solutions. I'd love to see this project off the ground in a huge way, and I've decided to commit myself to assisting in whatever small way that I can, even if it's only feedback. So now I've gotten the @!%@&@^ bugs on my site worked out, I've set aside time this weekend to work with your portal and find the simplest way to install it on my test site. If I can get it to go, It's going straight to my live site for feedback and testing via my members.

This is really the only way to improve.. live testing. I happily and without reserve, volunteer my site for a live test site. If there's room for improvement, believe me, my members will find it.

Thanks feline, for your hard work on this, and giving us an option where one did not previously exist.

Stay tuned for future "moaning" ::)
