Smileys in shoutbox.
« on: 04.07.12, 11:01:40 »
Ok, I found this old topic: http://portamx.com/2839/smf-smileys-in-portamx-1-41-shoutbox/

I assume this problem is still current, since it seems to be happening on a 1.5 installation.  It appears to affect BBC tags too. Quite honestly, this should be viewed as a bug, and quite a large one, in Porta. People expect to be able to use the full range of a site's smileys and BBC tags in a shoutbox, if they are typed in manually.

Other portals can do this. Tiny Portal did it way back in 0.9.8. If other portals can do it, while still providing admin editing of blocks, etc, then I'm not sure why PortaMx cannot do it. You can't really expect people to write custom arrays just to be able to use a custom smiley in a shoutbox. I can write the arrays if necessary, but most admins and average users will regard this as a bug and it will affect acceptance of PortaMx.

PortaMx should just draw from the site's default smiley set, and from the site's BBC tags.
Using Internet Explorer 6 on the internet is like urinating in a public swimming pool.
It's rude, there's no excuse for it, and anyone who does it should be ashamed of themselves.

Any Portal have his pro and cons ..
We prefer the compatibility between the blocks .. html to bbc, bbc to html, bbc to script, html to script and so one and for this it's necessary to use a defined Smiley set. Which other portal can do these converting?
If you need other Smileys, you can overwrite the PortaMx Smiley Set with your own.

And the Shoutbox .. it's small give-away .. not more, not less and it works as designed.

Yes I understand that. Shoutboxes are for silly stuff, and people like being silly. They grumble if anything gets in the way. I know what they're like. I have to fix things for them.

Ok, question: if I load all the custom smileys into the PMx set, will the shoutbox pick those up automatically, or do I still have to write a custom array?  I assume I still have to edit the array.

Same for BB codes. They don't seem to work by default, and people will expect them to. If they don't work, people will grumble about things being "broken".

How hard would it be to provide an interface to add allowed BB codes for the shoutbox? Alternatively, make the shoutbox just pick up any existng PMx smileys and BB codes the site already has. They don't all have to appear in the shoutbox pop-up.

ETA: I don't mind writing a bit of code myself if it's not too hard. I'm hacking PMx anyway to make it do what I want. :)

Only Smileys with the same filename are used ...

The shoutbox have it's own code to convert the "bbc" codes. This code is smaller and faster then the SMF code itself.
Also a good subset of the bbc code is enough for a shoutbox we mean.

It's practically not possible, but .. I anyone have interest to write a other shoutbox he can do that ...
